When I asked a few dog owners in the neighborhood if they thought their dogs were empathetic, most of them said yes, of course. As examples of empathy, they gave me examples that their dogs always come to them when they are sad or respond to their cries. Do our dogs have the ability to feel empathy?
Let’s start with an explanation of the word empathy.
EMPATHY
the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
To accurately understand the word empathetic, you have to perfectly understand another person’s experience. That is sad, I feel you. I understand what you must be going through. You have to have ability to understand it.Do our dogs feel empathy?
Unfortunately, we still don’t know that.Certainly some dogs are capable of picking up our emotions. Science has shown that 22% of dogs start yawning when they see their owners yawning. That’s why I think some dogs can feel a certain level of empathy.
