Vacation, holiday, sun and relax. How do you feel when you hear those words? They evoke positive emotions in most of us,don’t they? The holiday season is almost there and we start planning our vacations, but have you ever wondered how our dogs see a few days out of town? How to prepare properly when taking our four-legged friend with us? What should we keep in mind?
Firstly, for many dogs a change in routine, environment and travel can prove stressful, so it is important to do everything you can to keep your pets happy and stress free. Traveling with a dog isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it is much more exciting. It requires a lot of planning, but if you plan everything right, you can count on making wonderful memories for years.
Location is a key.
Nowadays, it is becoming easier and easier to find a hotel or guesthouse that offers guests the opportunity to organize a vacation with their pet.I was travelling with Sherlock since he was a puppy and I have found that some places advertise themselves as dog friendly when in fact they are not. When you have decided to take your dog on holiday with you consider his needs and choose places and activities where he can accompany you. Sunbathing for hours, museums or even restaurants are not a good idea. It is also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the surroundings of the location of your stay.
Prepare your dog.
For Sherlock, a vacation is nothing but an adventure. We still use the word “adventure” when we want him to jump in the car and lie down. When you travel by car, remember to take breaks during the journey. Take a long walk before you start driving.
Before you hit the road, try to make a list of things that your dog may need. Make sure you have enough food, treats, bowls, collar. Bringing a blanket and some of your dog’s favorite toys can help him relax in the first few hours after arriving.
Visit to the vet
It’s also a good idea to have a check-up with your vet to make sure your pet’s current health allows him to travel freely. . Since many dogs get ticks while walking in the summer it’s a good idea to ask your doctor for an special pills or anti tick dog collar.
Keep the routine.
If you are taking your dog on vacation for the first time, you should be cautious and consider how your dog will react to a sudden change. It is important to keep as many constant elements in their routine as possible.
